CHAPTER 16

~Violet’s Playlist: Paradise City, Guns And Roses~

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

I found myself in a dark alley between two tall buildings. I could hear the muffled sounds of a blaring television and a yapping dog. Directly in front of me was an overflowing dumpster which sat next to a wide metal door.

I was outside the entry to the Den of Iniquity.

The Threshold had spit me out here, and I wondered why Elijah and I hadn’t used it when we’d first visited the club in search of the Oracle. I shook my head. It didn’t matter. I was just glad to know where I was.

I paused for a moment, questioning if there could be any benefit from stopping in at the underground immortal hot spot. Perhaps there was information I could learn about the Fatales before I went to steal from them.

When more yapping sounded from behind the door, I decided against it. Instead, I turned, determined to make my way straight to the Fatale house. But as I began down the dark alley, I caught a glimpse of my hand, and the sight of it made me pause.

There was still a gray tone to my skin. It had improved. It was nowhere near as bad as it had been. But it was still unsettling.

I took a deep breath of cold night air, wanting to cleanse away the tinge of death which I felt covering me. And then I retched. Taking a deep breath had been a mistake. I eyed the side of the entry to D.I.

That fucking dumpster.

From blocks away, I could hear the music. Once I had reached the Fatales’ mansion, I had to fight not to hold my hands up to my ears.

Paradise City by Guns N’ Roses was blasting through arena grade speakers.

I knew the Fatales liked to party, but this was a little much. Wondering what the hell was going on, I approached the front gate to the property.

I suddenly felt power and heat nearby. My eyes flew to the figure standing by the entry.

He took a step towards me, practically blocking out the street light with his size, and steam rose from the ground where his feet met the pavement. In an instant, his pupils elongated as his irises turned a neon teal.

Then a hiss clicked in the back of his throat, and he questioned me in a gritty voice. While he sounded more human now, I could still recognize his voice as the dragon who had tried to stop us when we stole the gemstone. It was the one who appeared to be their leader…Hellion.

“What is your business here?”

Keeping my body still, I barely gave my head a tilt in the direction of the Fatale mansion. “They took something from me. I’m here to get it back.”

It was a lie, but I hoped it might earn me some empathy from the dragon.

He gave a humorless chuff. “Leave.”

I glanced at the huge speakers. “You’re going to call attention to the mortals. You’re violating all kinds of agreements.
